Australia-Japan Fresh Produce Exports: Japan Regains Export Share as Citrus and Melon Volumes Rise

Australia’s fresh produce exports to Japan have surged nearly 20% over two years, driven by strong citrus and melon growth and a rebound in market share.

Japan remains a key export market for Australian fresh produce, with strong growth across citrus and melons driving a renewed lift in volume and share. Australian exports to Japan reached 69,539 tonnes in the year ending March 2025, up from 58,390 tonnes in the year ending March 2023 — a nearly 20% increase over two years.

After a dip in the year ending March 2024, Japan’s share of Australia’s total fruit and vegetable exports recovered to 10.5% in the latest period, up from 8.8%, and above its 10% share two years ago.

Our latest analysis highlights:

  • Oranges continue to lead, increasing from 36,189 tonnes in 2024 to 41,076 tonnes in 2025, maintaining their dominant role in the Japan export mix.
  • Mandarin exports are steadily increasing, rising from 3,950 tonnes in 2023 to 4,598 tonnes in 2025.
  • Other citrus, including lemons and limes, more than doubled from 2,266 tonnes in 2023 to 6,347 tonnes in 2025.
  • Melon exports grew year-on-year, reaching 5,029 tonnes in 2025, up from 4,281 tonnes in 2023.
  • Avocado exports fluctuated, peaking at 954 tonnes in 2024 before easing to 403 tonnes in 2025 — possibly reflecting supply changes or shifting varietal focus.

With Japan now accounting for over 10% of Australia’s total fruit and vegetable exports, it remains a critical destination market. The strong performance in citrus and melons — alongside growing diversification — signals clear opportunities for exporters offering reliability, premium quality, and seasonal consistency.
