Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Retail Promotions – September 2025 Quarter Summary

Fruit and Vegetable Retail Promotions rose 7.5% in September 2025, led by Coles and all major retailers.

Fresh fruit and vegetable retail promotions in the September 2025 quarter increased in overall activity compared to the September 2024 quarter.

The leading products advertised during the quarter were Mandarins, Apples, Cut Leaf Salads, Packaged Salads, Potatoes, Oranges, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Carrots, and Kiwifruit.

The total number of adverts increased by 7.5% (+341 adverts) compared to the September 2024 quarter, generating a total of 4,867 adverts. This increase reflects varied retail approaches and a growing sensitivity to inventory erosion and its impact on total sales value.

Significant changes at the product level included increases for:

  • Packaged Salads (+151 adverts / +111.9%)
  • Mandarins (+100 / +38.6%)
  • Avocados (+79 / +90.8%)
  • Cut Leaf Salads (+69 / +29.6%)
  • Pears (+47 / +81.0%)

Major decreases were recorded for:

  • Blueberries (-45 adverts / -27.4%)
  • Strawberries (-38 / -24.2%)
  • Apples (-36 / -10.0%)
  • Tomatoes (-36 / -13.0%)
  • Watermelons (-45 / -75.8%)

All retailers increased their number of adverts:

  • Coles +16.1%
  • Greengrocer +9.3%
  • Woolworths +5.7%
  • Aldi +5.6%
  • IGA/Costco +0.3%

The average advertised price per kilogram for the quarter increased by 2.2% to $8.67/kg. Price changes by retailer were:

  • Woolworths +7.5%
  • IGA/Costco +6.9%
  • Aldi +5.2%
  • Coles -7.7%
  • Greengrocer -2.2%

The overall increase in retail promotional activity of 7.5% was attributed to higher activity across all retailers, with Coles contributing the most significant uplift.
