Australia Fruit and Vegetable Import Trends: 5 Years of Market Change

Australia fruit and vegetable import trends profile is evolving. Discover which categories are growing, which are declining, and what the latest trends mean for the fresh produce market.

Australia fruit and vegetable import trends has shifted significantly over the past five years, reflecting changing production patterns, seasonality, and supply dynamics across key categories. Insights from our latest analysis highlight where imports are growing, where they are contracting, and how local production continues to reshape market opportunities.

Key Trends Shaping the Market

Imports of citrus and table grapes continue to trend lower

Categories such as oranges, mandarins and table grapes have experienced a sustained decline in import volumes over recent years, reflecting Australia’s longer domestic production windows and an increased ability to meet demand locally. Imports of oranges fell from more than 14,000 tonnes in 2021 to around 10,000 tonnes in recent years, while mandarins and table grapes have also trended downward.

Australia is extending domestic supply capability

Across several fruit categories, improvements in growing regions, varieties and season management have enabled local producers to supply the market for longer periods of the year. As a result, imports are increasingly being used to complement domestic supply rather than fill major seasonal gaps.

Kiwifruit remains the standout import category

Despite shifts across many fruit categories, kiwifruit imports have continued to expand, growing from approximately 23,700 tonnes in 2021 to more than 32,000 tonnes in 2026, maintaining its position as Australia’s largest imported fruit category.

Garlic continues to dominate vegetable imports

Garlic remains Australia’s largest vegetable import category and has shown consistent growth over the period, rising from approximately 14,000 tonnes in 2021 to nearly 18,000 tonnes in 2026. Onions and mushrooms have also strengthened their positions among the leading imported vegetable categories.

What Does This Mean for the Market?

The past five years have highlighted a shift in Australia’s fresh produce supply landscape. While imports remain critical for maintaining continuity of supply, several traditionally imported fruit categories are becoming less reliant on offshore sourcing as domestic production capacity and seasonal coverage improve. At the same time, select categories continue to present strong import opportunities due to consumer demand, availability and supply chain economics.

Understanding where these category movements are occurring can help businesses identify emerging opportunities, anticipate competitive pressures and make more informed sourcing decisions.
