December ’23 QTR Wholesale Price Movements

Australian fruit and vegetable wholesale prices stabilise to -3.1% in December '23 Quarter, primarily driven by lower prices for most vegetables alongside firmer prices for high-volume fruits.

Australian fruit and vegetable wholesale prices serve as a key indicator of available supply and market values, with the Dec 23 quarter typically seeing an uptick in demand for salad vegetables and seasonal fruits. This quarter, wholesale prices experienced a -3.1% decrease, primarily driven by lower prices for most vegetables alongside firmer prices for high-volume fruits. Although similar influencing factors were observed compared to the previous Sep 23 quarter, the decrease moderated from -16.5% to -3.1%, indicating a substantial firming in vegetable prices.

The influence of recovered vegetable production conditions and the absence of price peaks from the previous year played a dominant role in shaping wholesale prices this quarter. While staple fruits like bananas maintained firm pricing, increased supply led to lower prices for berries and avocados. Overall, wholesale prices for fruit and vegetables decreased by -3.1% in the Dec 23 quarter compared to the previous year, reflecting stable vegetable supply and a recovery from lower prices observed in the same period last year.
